Therapeutic ultrasound has been used in physiotherapy for over 70 years and remains one of the most extensively researched treatment modalities. It works by delivering high-frequency sound waves, well beyond the range of human hearing, deep into soft tissue through a handheld probe.
At therapeutic doses, ultrasound produces two main effects. It can generate a gentle, targeted warmth within dense tissues like tendon, ligament, and joint capsule, improving local blood flow and tissue flexibility. It also creates microscopic mechanical effects at the cellular level, encouraging cells to become more active and responsive. This helps the body's own natural repair processes work more efficiently at each stage of healing, from calming and optimising early inflammation through to guiding the production and organisation of new tissue.
Rather than replacing the body's healing response, ultrasound acts as a trigger, helping tissue that is healing slowly or is stuck to get back on track, and helping normally-healing tissue recover a little faster. It's commonly used for tendon and ligament injuries, muscle strains, and other soft tissue conditions, and is safe, painless, and well-tolerated.
